The new Naples – Afragola HS Station
On Friday, July 16th, with the attendance of the Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Mr. Altero Matteoli and the Italian State Railways (FS) CEO Mr. Mauro Moretti, the "first stone" ceremony of the new Naples – Afragola HS Station has been celebrated.
The design has been entrusted to Zaha Hadid Architects, following an international design competition launched by the Italian State Railways (Ferrovie dello Stato).
The station is conceived as a "bridge" which, overcoming the tracks of the Rome-Naples HS/HC line and the upcoming Cancello/Naples line, connects the area spanned by the rail line gifting continuity to the landscape. Vast windows will form the main body of the station whose curvy shape recalls the image of a modern train running. Wide bright corridors, distributed on four levels, covering an overall surface of 30 thousand square meters, will house the customer services and the commercial activities.
The first stage of the works will be completed within the end of 2011, when the station will be opened to the passengers, while the completion of the functional works for the commercial services is planned in 2012.
