Motorways of the Sea for the Black Sea and Caspian Sea
Italferr, as part of a consortium constituted for this specific purpose, has been given the mandate by the European Commission to carry out transport engineering works denominated “Motorways of the Sea for the Black Sea and Caspian Sea”.
The work involves the development and promotion of the motorways of the sea in the Caspian and Black Seas, including the infrastructures connecting them with land-based networks.
Specifically, Italferr is in charge of the study on modernising the railway lines dedicated to Caspian and Black Sea ports, an infrastructure project which is indispensible in the light of increasing goods movement by ship.
The study involves the analysis of the existing transport infrastructures in a vast region stretching from Ukraine to the Caucasus and from Turkey to Central Asia.
Among the main objectives of the project, financed by the new ENPI community funds intended for countries bordering the European Union, is that of identifying modernisation works which can develop the potential of an infrastructure network to support intermodal transport in the area, thus attracting international investments aimed at infrastructure growth to improve the flow of goods between Europe and the East.
The project takes on special importance for the European Commission, both from the point of view of financing eco-compatible transport systems such as the motorways of the sea, and from the point of view of political support to the EU’s neighbouring countries.
The planned work started in January 2009 and will end in January 2011.
