Naples Node
The Naples Node is one of the essential points of the national railway system, for which it represents an intersection, both for several important lines originating from other national and regional centres and for the High Speed system.
Once the necessary High Speed lines have been realised, it will be possible to recover capacity on the existing railway network which can be used for enhancing regional and district passenger traffic and freight traffic. Furthermore the new running margins, together with the possibility to separate and channel traffic by route and by level of offer, consequent to the works foreseen for this Node, shall allow improved fluidity of the circulation and reduced conflicts between long distance passenger traffic, regional traffic and freight traffic.
Once upgraded, the infrastructural and technological structure of the Naples Node shall thereby allow a running model to be realised having the primary objective of implementing a transport system characterised by:
high intermodal and multimodal integration;
increased system capacity;
higher service standard.
In order to achieve the objectives outlined above, the following infrastructural and technological enhancement have been planned:
technological/performance related interventions on the large nodes (Rome, Milan, Naples) for completing the technological upgrade of the node and completing command and control automation for the plants of pertinence, the realisation of safety and signalling systems in order to maintain proportionate capacity and performance in the lines, in terms of frequency and speed of the service, as well as commercial specialisation of the lines;
new line upstream of Vesuvius;
enhancement of the Villa Literno-Gianturco-Cancello-Caserta-Torre Annunziata link;
IDP construction, Naples Shunting;
North/South connection;
HS station, Afragola;
Rome-Naples HS/HS section.
