Adriatic

The Adriatic main line, extending mostly along the eastern Italian cost from Bologna to Lecce/Taranto, connects Northern Italy to Central Europe, with the network of southern Italian ports (Brindisi, Taranto, Gioia Tauro) and makes up an integral part of the system of freight corridors at a European level, known as the “Terfn network”.
In this context, a series of projects were planned, aiming to widen traffic size restrictions providing a route enabling the passage of road vehicles on drop-centre flatcars that have the widest allowed gauges and shipping containers of the “high-cube” type, loaded on carriages with standard floors.
Furthermore, infrastructure work has been planned on this Main line to complete the track-doubling on the stretches that are still single-track with relevant technological work over the whole line, aimed at giving the railway route the performance features necessary to act, in terms of passenger and freight traffic, as a main North-South link in the south-eastern corner of the country.

The main projects are:
• Adriatic main line tunnel adjustment to gauge C (work on Castellano and Cattolica tunnels)
•  Bologna-Baritechnological upgrade
• Track doubling, Pescara- Bari (includes track doubling in Termoli-Lesina, Apricena-S.Severo and stretch to the north of Ortona)
• Bari – Tarant track doubling (includes track doubling in Bari S.Andrea-Bitetto, Palagianello-Palagiano, bretella Bellavista-Cagioni)
• Bari-Lecce track doubling and electrification
