Montenegro-Serbia: upgrade of the Belgrade - Bar railway line

Italferr was entrusted with the upgrade Study of the Belgrade - Bar railway line, which connects the Danube River and the Adriatic Sea. The line connects the Serbian capital and the Montenegro’s Adriatic port with a mountainous track designed in the 1950s and activated in 1976.

The current technical characteristics of the line are:
•  single electrified track
•  average speed: 45 km/h (the operational speed restrictions are connected to the rail track conditions and some  emergency situations such as landslides and instability of bridges and viaducts)
•  length: 455 km (280 km in Serbia, 165 km in Montenegro and 10 km in Bosnia-Herzegovina)
•  minimum radius of curvature of 300 mt
•  design average speed of 80 km/h
•  maximum slope of 25‰ (the maximum altitude of 1,030 mt above sea level is reached at Kolašin)
•  254 tunnels for a length of 24% of the route
•  234 bridges and viaducts for a total of 15 km.

Among the works of art there is also the bridge rising 200 mt above the Mala Rijeka River, which is considered one of the highest in the world.

After a long period of poor maintenance and the absence of upgrade interventions connected with the wartime conditions of the region, the Belgrade-Bar is now jointly managed by the Serbs and Montenegrins and was in part reactivated thanks to international funding.

As far as the Study is concerned, Italfer will deal with:
•  gathering data on infrastructures, operations and goods/passenger traffic in the region
•  modelling the infrastructure using software
•  defining and simulating future operations scenarios
•  identifying the main bottlenecks and determining the short, medium and long term interventions to be performed
•  detailed study of the interventions on civil works and technological systems
•  economic and financial analysis of the investment program based on the traffic data
•  plan of action for the optimisation of line management.

Work started in November 2009 and will finish at the end of 2010.
