Palermo Hub
In Palermo, just like in the main metropolitan areas, a radical transformation of the public transport network is underway, based on upgrading the Metropolitan Railway Service, connected and integrated with tram and bus lines and park-and-ride parking lots. One of the supporting pillars of this transformation is the Passante railway, due to cross Palermo and its metropolitan area, from Cefalù to Punta Raisi Airport: a 90km route, 24 of which inside the city, with 17 stations and 22 stops.
The Project aims are as follow:
• to strengthen railway transport supply, increasing train frequency
• to create a railway service of the metropolitan type, integrated with the Public Transport Plan in the Palermo urban area with 6 stations and 17 stops in urban and suburban settings
• to strengthen the link with Punta Raisi Airport with a regular service
• to offer a more efficient railway service in terms of usability, functionality, regularity and cost-effectiveness of the service
• to facilitate the movement of commuter flows between Palermo and the following municipalities: Isola delle Femmine, Capaci, Carini, Cinisi and Terrasini
• to eliminate all level crossings
• to centralise and automate all the main railway functions
To achieve the projects described above an integrated project has been drawn named Palermo Hub.
