Upgrading Railways in former Soviet countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan
Italfer has completed the review of the upgrade project for the railway system of the former Soviet Union, created to facilitate internal relations and trade with North European member-countries of the former USSR, into a new transport network to satisfy the current needs of the Central Asian countries. The project contemplates rehabilitating an approx. 20,000 km railway network and includes links to other modes of transport.
The project, developed on behalf of the European Union, was completed in 2005.

The general aim of the project has been to develop and improve telecommunication systems and railway signalling in five Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union.
The main activities undertaken are:
• Transferring know-how to the management of the telecommunications and signalling structures in railways;
• preparing feasibility studies to modernise every single telecommunications and signalling system on the railways;
• preparing detailed design-specifications for tenders for suppliers of system components.
The project, developed on behalf of the European Union, was completed in 2003.
