New Bologna underground rail link goes into operation

On the night of 21/22 June, 2012, the Bologna Underground Rail Link was put into operation. An HS urban section of rail track, with more than 10 km of its total 17.8 km length running underground, its introduction means that non-stop trains between Rome and Milan can now do the journey in just two hours forty minutes.
Italferr supervised the link’s design, acted as head of works for contracts covering both the civil engineering and technological components required for completion of the Bologna underground rail link in addition to managing trial runs for the certification of safety and signalling systems and train circulation.
In order to complete the underground rail link, cutting edge excavation methods were adopted and the link has also been fitted with innovative, technologically advanced emergency management systems.
The new infrastructure will impact positively, in both quantitative and qualitative terms, on local train circulation. Congestion will be relieved in the overground trains as a result, which can then be used specifically for regional and city commuters and the transport of goods.
