Mestre Hub
The Mestre Hub is the converging point for several important national main railway lines (Milan – Venice; Venice – Bologna – Rome), of the main interregional lines (Venice – Trieste; Venice – Udine) and of all the local lines in the Veneto region.
As such it represents, in the Triveneto area, the most important gathering point for long haul railway (mostly passenger) traffic on the East/West main line and towards the South and constitutes the major integration point with regional and metropolitan transport.
In preparation for future construction of the Milan – Venice – Trieste HS/HC line, track quadruplication has begun on the Padua – Mestre stretch and the new Overall Development Plan for Venice – Mestre station aimed at facilitating separating traffic flows by main lines and by supply levels reducing conflicts between the various types of trains (at least for entry/exit movements to the West of the Hub).
This infrastructural work, together with technological upgrade work on the facility, will enable a significant expansion of transport capacity at Venice – Mestre station and, more generally, on all the lines linked to the Hub in such a way as to be able to live up to the growing demand for transport coming from this territory.
For the purpose of improving standards of service to customers and traffic flow performance levels in the entire metropolitan regional area, the CCS project for the Veneto region has begun.
Thanks to the above, the Mestre Hub infrastructural and technological, scheme, once complete, will make it possible to achieve an operational model the primary aim of which will be to implement a transport system characterised by:
high intermodal integration, significant expansion of transport capacity, high standards of service, reduction in management costs
To achieve the above aims, the following technological and infrastructural upgrade work has been planned:
Padua-Mestre track quadruplication
introduction of the command and control system (CCS) for the central Veneto area
adjusting the Venice-Mestre Hub
