New successes by Italferr in Sub-Saharan Africa

Italferr secures contracts in Congo and Ethiopia.

After the agreements signed in November with the Republic of Congo, Italferr, the engineering company of FS Italiane, has further strengthened its foothold in Sub-Saharan Africa by securing two new contracts in December 2016.

Following an international competition, Italferr was selected by the General Secretariat of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), based at Libreville in Gabon, to review the final design for the 1500 m long road and rail bridge spanning the Congo River between Kinshasa and Brazzaville, as well as the preliminary design for the Kinshasa – Ilabo railway line.

These two projects will help significantly increase traffic flows and improve links between Central African countries, besides easing the isolation of the Democratic Republic of Congo and boosting infrastructure investment policies in the region.

In the same region, Italferr, thanks to its expertise in the Ethiopian rail network, has been selected to assist the “World Food Programme” at Addis Ababa in conducting a technical and economic assessment of the transportation by rail of the humanitarian aid to the areas in Ethiopia affected by the severe drought in 2016. These activities, which feature a huge social impact on the areas concerned, started in mid-December and will be completed in April 2017.
