Florence Hub
The Florence Hub is one of the major railway facilities on the HS/HC Milan-Rome Main line and as such is directly concerned by the infrastructural work linked to the development of the HS/HC project. In addition, this facility represents the major gathering point for central Tuscan area regional lines and constitutes the core of the Metropolitan Regional Railway System, efficiently integrated with the other modes of transport (tramway/road) serving the city.
Thanks to the work on the HS/HC line, for High Speed trains, S. M. Novella station will change from being a head station to a through station, following the building of a new link between the Bologna-Florence HS/HC line and Florence-Rome Direttissima line, crossing under the station itself. This will make it possible to reduce train stop-times in the facility and above it will be possible to specialise traffic flows by main line and by supply, reducing conflicts between the various types of traffic. Furthermore, the building of the HS/HC line will provide a significant recovery of capacity on the existing railway line, to be used to develop regional and metropolitan traffic.
Thanks to the above, the Florence Hub infrastructural and technological scheme, once modernised, will make it possible to adopt an operational model having, as its primary aim, the implementation of a transport system characterised by:
• high intermodal and plurimodal integration and significant expansion of the transport capacity
• high standards of service to customers
To achieve the above aims, aside from the HS work, prioritised in the hub scheme, the following technological and infrastructural upgrade work has been planned, with a view to regenerating the lines linked to the hub and the industrial installations for rolling stock maintenance:
• Florence – Empoli infrastructural upgrade
• Florence – Prato infrastructural upgrade
• building Osmannoro DMS (Dynamic Multifunction Facility)
• work in the Florence Hub linked to the HS
