Prefeasibility study of the HS Cairo-Alexandria line
The Egyptian Ministry of Transport has assigned Italferr with the development of a Prefeasibility Study for an about 220-km long High Speed line to connect Cairo with Alexandria, two of the most populated cities in Africa and in the world (Cairo - population of about 18 million and Alexandria - 6 million).
The study looks at the technical-economic feasibility of the new rail corridor destined mainly to passengers with a maximum project speed of 300km/h (100 km/h for urban areas).
The project includes:
• market analysis (study of the current and future supply and demand)
• definition of service levels which the new line should guarantee
• analysis of the infrastructural alternatives able to satisfy the line performance
• analysis of the consequent service alternatives
• estimate of investment costs
• financial sustainability of the investment.
Work started in July 2009 and are due for completion within 2010.
