Bologna Hub
Within the national railway system, the Bologna Hub represents a crucial HS and long-haul traffic interchange point on the network’s North/South and East/West main lines.
Bologna station, furthermore, represents an important gathering point for regional lines and as such constitutes the heart of the Emilia Romagna region metropolitan system.
Building the HS/HC lines on the existing railway network will allow a recovery of useful capacity to develop regional, metropolitan and freight traffic.
Additionally, the new operational margins, together with the possibility of separating traffic by main lines and by supply levels, resulting from the infrastructural and technological work planned for the Hub, will make it possible to reduce conflicts between the various types of traffic, significantly increasing regional/metropolitan traffic capacity, and improve qualitative standards offered to customers.
Thanks to the above, the Bologna Hub infrastructural and technological scheme, once modernised, will provide an operational model, the primary aim of which is to implement a transport system characterised by:
high intermodal and plurimodal integration significant expansion of transport capacity high standards of service to customers
To achieve the aims outlined above, aside from the HS work, prioritised in the regeneration of the Hub, the following technological and infrastructural upgrade work has been planned:
Bologna Central and Hub, Command and Control System building stops and adapting stations for the Bologna metropolitan service (the following stations and stops are not included in the scope of the plan: Zanardi, S.Vitale, Prati di Caprara, Airport)
