Virgolo Railway Tunnel

In June 2013, Areale Bolzano (ABZ SpA) engaged Italferr to draw up the Preliminary Design Project for the Virgolo railway tunnel.
In order to separate traffic at the Southern junction, currently consisting of two ordinary tracks serving freight and passenger traffic of the two railway lines (Verona-Brennero and Merano-San Candido), it is necessary to create a three-line modified tunnel section under the Virgolo rock face.
This design project is part of a more complex regeneration and redevelopment plan for the Bolzano Area, which envisions drawing up an “Urban Planning Scheme” for the areas that currently belong to the Italian Railway network; this includes relocating the railway station closer to the Eisack river.
