Scientific Research

Thanks to our studies, design projects and research work, at Italferr we are committed to promoting and developing infrastructure engineering and constantly strive to improve our technology base and production capacity to deliver increasingly reliable and innovative solutions.

Thanks to its highly qualified staff and its expert level of know-how, Italferr has set up a number of significant cooperation projects with many important and diverse national and international academic institutions and scientific associations, promoting conventions and agreements for the transfer of technology, for support in training and in education, as well as for the development and enhancement of research in all fields of engineering required in the railway sector.

As regards civil engineering in particular, since 2013 Italferr has held the chair of the Società Italiana Gallerie (SIG), a non profit technical/scientific association that spreads know-how in the field of design and construction of tunnels and large-sized underground works, promoting the use of the underground.

Since 2014, moreover, it is a member of the Executive Board of the Associazione Geotecnica Italiana (AGI), an association that disseminates geotechnical culture within the scientific and professional sectors.
Algorithm and satellite-based techniques for monitoring even the smallest ground deformation and software for understanding how an infrastructure may impact on the surrounding environment, as part of the knowledge-sharing process with the local decision-makers, are just two examples of cutting-edge tools developed by Italferr, together with our university partners. We also conduct tests on HS lines, both on the ground and in the laboratory, in order to assess train-structure aerodynamic interaction and analyse the dynamic response of rail bridges to trains running at high speeds.
With a view to further increasing our engineering and scientific expertise we also take part in meetings, courses and conventions and publish articles and papers in prominent specialist infrastructure journals.
Being well-established in the normative and production-related sectors, at Italferr we also actively contribute to the preparation of technical standards, circulars and specifications for all rail-related fields and activities.

Regulatory Developments

Working alongside various scientific research bodies and institutions and taking part in technological research and development programmes and projects, in Italy and abroad, means that Italferr has built a capacity to provide support in the functional, technical, regulatory and organisational decision-making process throughout the entire life cycle of a project.
Regarding rail Regulatory Developments, considering the strategic importance of systematically overseeing the definition and amendment activities relating to the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) issued by the European Commission, as well as the need to provide a structured contribution to regulatory evolution and standardisation in Europe, Italferr is participating, with its own Team of experts, in the support effort implemented by the CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) to the activities of the ERA (European Railway Agency).
This specific expertise, combined with the normative research, surveillance and maintenance process, has led to the creation of special databases capable of further aiding our design skills.
