Professional profile

Carlo Carganico graduated in Electronic Engineering from the Milan Polytechnical University in 1977 and, after graduating, started working in the fields of Information Technology field (Honeywell Information Systems) and machine tool automation (Innocenti Santeustacchio), where he built up a basic expertise in developing microprocessor products and systems for industrial automation. He spent over ten years in process control automation working in Genoa (Ansaldo, Esacontrol, Elsag Bailey), holding various positions in Italy, Europe and the USA (Cleveland, Ohio), joining the engineering unit of Bailey Controls.

In 1993, he joined the Engineering and Construction Division of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, as manager in charge of the functional/safety type approval of innovative rail infrastructure products and systems. He also spent two years in Brussels as CEO of a European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG) for the development of the ERTMS system, and was later placed in charge of implementing the ERTMS on the HS lines in Italy.

Between 1997 and 1999 he was in charge of the Technological Systems Organisation Unit at Italferr SpA, where he was responsible for planning and developing new engineering and safety investments in the conventional network, taking part in the strategic decision-making process for defining and planning the technology system for Italian high-speed lines. From 2000 to 2006, as the Manager in charge of safety and conformity certification to the European and domestic standard at RFI – Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, he participated in implementing the investments in new rail technology, preparing bids for European and Italian tendering processes and serving on tenders committees, as wither member of chair.

From 2007 to September 2016, he served as Chief Executive Officer and President of Italcertifer, a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group established in 2001, with four major Italian universities among its shareholders. During his term here Italcertifier was accredited as both a Notified Body and Independent Safety Assessor, providing verification and certification services for interoperable products and systems in both the high speed and conventional rail sectors, with reference to European and national requirements. He also reorganised the company, which reached a leading position in Italy, in terms of both its turnover and orders portfolio. In 2010, the company started expanding on the foreign markets, securing important contracts in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Australia, United Arab Emirates, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Sweden and Finland. Over the years, Italcertifier has become a global competitor in the field of rail certification services and, generally speaking, as an independent third-party assessor.

In July 2016 he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Italferr SpA, the engineering company of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, which, in over 30 years, has built up a wealth of experience, in Italy and worldwide, in large infrastructure projects in both the conventional and high speed rail sectors, metropolitan and road transport and the design of ports and stations.
