Bologna Rail Crossing

Underground section of the Turin-Salerno HS/HC line

The Bologna Rail Crossing is the 10-km long underground section of the high-speed rail line between Turin and Salerno that runs through Bologna, comprising the 6 km long twin-bore southern access tunnel to the city’s brand new underground high speed station.
Due to the geotechnical conditions of the soil and the inner-city location it was decided to use a tunnelling machine fitted with an EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) shield.
An innovative compensation grouting process was employed to minimise ground settlement damage to utility assets. It was the first time this process was used in Italy, in connection with tunnelling work.
Italferr was responsible for the execution planning stage and the Works Management.
