Italferr on the way to new opportunities and goals with the Soterramiento Sarmiento Railway Line Project.

Italferr was appointed in 2016 by the Consortium CNS - Consorcio Nuevo Sarmiento - as the railway systems designer of the New Sarmiento Line in Buenos Aires.
The project involves the full rehabilitation of the Sarmiento rail line - 36 km long - and particularly the construction of a new underground section - 18 km - with the top of rail designed at a depth of -22 m below ground level, by means of TBM tunnelling. Furthermore, the project also envisages the construction of 9 new stations using the conventional NATM method, except for one which will be built with the cut-and-cover method.

The engineering Company of Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (Italian Railways Group) is currently enlarging its role. The Americas Area Manager of Italferr, came back from his last business development trip with the opportunity for the Company  to become the main designer of the entire Sarmiento Line, eventually mobilizing more than 20 technical experts to work side by side with the Contractor in Buenos Aires. The Client, GS consortium, recognized Italferr experience and capability to take the Sarmiento project to the next level. A first group of 10 key experts flew to Buenos Aires at the beginning of October 2017 to assist with the transition to main designer, making Italferr the key actor in the design of one of Argentina’s priorities and one of the major rail investments in South America, with an overall investment cost estimated in more than 3 Billion dollars.

The team will be involved in the following disciplines:

  • signaling, telecom, MEP, energy, maintenance yards, track and alignment – “sistema integral de la linea”
  • civil, above ground structures, underground structures, architecture, stations and tunnels (TBM and NATM).
