Istanbul’s “Eurasia Tunnel” opens

Yet another international success story for Italferr S.p.A. – the engineering company of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, which was awarded the 11 million dollar contract in May 2014, for supervising the construction of the road tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait undersea (Eurasia Tunnel).

Inaugurated on 20 December 2016, with the presence of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other authorities, the “Eurasia Tunnel” is a road tunnel running underneath the Bosphorus Strait and connecting Europe to Asia. An important achievement for Italferr, which supervised this record-breaking project, completed no less than eight months ahead of schedule, as part of a Joint venture with the Turkish-based company Altinok.

The double-deck tunnel 14.6 km long, of which 5.4 beneath the Bosphorus, reaching a maximum depth of 106 metres below the seabed, features two lanes on each deck in both directions. The expected traffic flow through the tunnel is 100,000 vehicles per day, on average, and it will considerably shorten the journey time between the two continents from 100 to 15 minutes.

This project is yet another success story for Italian railways on the Turkish market, which has gained in importance in recent years and promises well for the future. The aim is to take part in further design and works supervision tenders for other large transport infrastructure projects, such as underground railways, roads, etc., to further strengthen our foothold in the region.
