New Puerto Cabello-La Encrucijada rail line
After having developed the final design of the civil works for the El Palito-La Encrucijada section and the preliminary design for the infrastructure and railway works on the Moron-Porto intermodal link of Puerto Cabello (27 km), on behalf of the Consorcio Gruppo Contuy (engaged to execute the works by the Istituto Autónomo de Ferrocariles del Estado - IAFE), Italferr carried out (also for Gruppo Contuy) the detailed design and production information stage for the works relating to the El Palito-La Encrucijada line.
The line is part of a development plan for a broader multi-modal freight and passenger transport system, the aim of which is to integrate the different needs and modes of transport by setting up logistical hubs and facilities for both rail (interports) and maritime (terminals and containers) facilities, to be linked up with the road transport network.
The line links the main Venezuelan port (Puerto Cabello) to the large industrial and agri-food centres of Valencia and Maracay. A future link is also planned to the cities of San Juan de los Morros, Calabozo and Cabruta, the main port on the Orinoco-Apure inland waterway.
The rail line will also connect with the Caracas-Tuy Medio section which is part of the same rail network.
The 109 km new railway (which, in compliance with the international standards, will be built as a double-track line with a maximum operating speed of 200 km/h) crosses a mountainous region with 15 tunnels (for a total of 36 km), and includes 26 bridges and 52 viaducts (for a total of 18 km).
The engagement also included design work for 7 passenger stations, 2 logistical centres, 2 line maintenance and rolling stock facilities.
Activities were completed in December 2010.
