Environmental Studies

Effective integration of infrastructure projects with the surroundings.
At Italferr it is our mission to preserve and protect the environment by making sure that our projects conform to the applicable European regulations and to sustainable development strategies.
To this end we develop ad hoc studies to assess the impact of our projects on the environment and the surrounding landscape, and, in general, to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of the infrastructure construction works.
STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT
In the course of our strategic environmental assessment work, we take into account the environment as a whole and the possible effects of the proposed plan/project.

FEASIBILITY AND PRE-FEASIBILITY
Numerous environmental parameters and indicators are taken into account in relation to the  complex multi-criteria decision analysis, with the assistance of dedicated software, in order to direct all plan/project decisions towards solutions capable of ensuring the best possible protection for the environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDIES
Our environmental impact studies are a means to analyse the surrounding landscape and examine and evaluate the potential final impact on the landscape and the levels of disturbance by the construction and other site activities.
Our environmental decisions, mitigation measures and the outcome of the remediation processes are all essential elements for the subsequent design and construction stages.

COMPATIBILITY WITH URBAN AND RURAL SETTINGS
Regardless of whether a project involves an urban or a rural setting, the effective integration with the landscape of an infrastructure project is dependent on a careful study of the area, an inspection of the static and dynamic aspects and a thorough assessment of how it will interfere with the surroundings. Based on this information and with the assistance of realistic photographic modelling, we then develop the best possible functional and architectural solution.

ASSESSMENT OF EFFECTS ON SITES INCLUDED IN THE NATURA 2000 SYSTEM
Before building an infrastructure we carefully assess its impact on the ecological balance, the continuity of the ecosystems concerned and its possible effects on any protected elements of the natural system, with the expert help of naturalists, ecologists, botanists and wildlife conservators.
The sensitivity of the landscape crossed by the infrastructure is assessed by means of inspections and thorough fieldwork. Analyses are carried out both locally and on a broader scale, in order to accurately measure the possible effects on the balance of the system. If necessary, compensatory or mitigation measures are recommended, in relation to both the rail project and any other connected works.
