A new goal on the Palermo-Messina railway line

The last diaphragm wall of the S. Ambrogio Natural Gallery has been demolished.

On Tuesday 20 December, with the demolition of the second and last diaphragm wall, the excavation of 3,960 m of the S. Ambrogio Natural Tunnel on the Ogliastrillo-Castelbuono section was successfully completed, carried out entirely with the traditional method, under the Works Management of Italferr, a company in the Infrastructure Pole of the FS Italiane Group.

The new tunnel, entirely in a variant of the double track layout, falls within the scope of the works for the railway doubling of the Palermo-Messina line.

The event completes one of the major works of the Cefalù construction site and gives a new impetus for the continuation of the further interventions planned in the tunnel, to then move on to the technological systems. An important milestone for Italferr which conducted the control of all the construction phases.

The next appointment will be the breaking down of the diaphragm wall of the Cefalù Tunnel by means of the TBM, which from Ogliastrillo will build one of the two single-track tubes with mechanized excavation and which has currently covered around 13% of the route.
