Rail infrastructure projects play a key role in driving the sustainable development of the Country, as strategic components in the development of more accessible and resilient cities and communities. At the same time, they can and must enhance landscape identity and improve regional cohesion and the quality of life of local communities.

Against this backdrop, our commitment towards Sustainability aims to steer the design process, and the company as a whole, towards embracing sustainable development objectives, nationally and internationally, by harmonising relations between projects, infrastructure and communities and reconciling Italferr’s engineering know how with a greater focus on design and social and economic factors.

At Italferr, we address Sustainability in both the design process and as an overarching ESG strategy, by rolling out ad hoc standards and gradually innovating our sustainability assessment methods. Furthermore, both Italferr and the FS Group, are engaged in an intense R&D partnership, between themselves and with the broader scientific community, to support our experimental efforts in this field. We promote and disseminate the culture of sustainability through the production of scientific guidelines and publications, training programmes and participation in conferences and seminars.

Alternative fuels

The graph data processed by ISPRA shows how (GHG) Greenhouse Gas emissions have reduced progressively in Italy in recent decades, following a trend that, if sustained by decarbonisation policies, could result in an overall reduction in the future of about 25% by 2040 (compared to 2022 levels).
