On Tuesday, 9 December 2025, a technical seminar was held on the “Sustainable Management of Excavation Spoil Materials: tools, regulations and best practices”, at Italferr's Via Galati headquarters in Rome. The seminar was sponsored by the Engineering Licensing Body of the Province of Rome, acting through its Sustainability and Tunnels and Innovative Excavation Systems Committees, in partnership with the Foundation of the Engineering Licensing Body of Rome and Italferr, the engineering company of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group.
The event was an important opportunity for an in-depth analysis and discussion on an issue of growing importance for the infrastructure sector, in light of the challenges posed by the ecological transition programme and the investments under the NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan). The proper management of excavation spoil materials (ESM), in fact, plays a strategic role in ensuring environmental sustainability, economic efficiency and full regulatory compliance in the design and construction of infrastructure construction projects.
The seminar also presented an updated overview of Presidential Decree 120/2017, currently under review, with a focus on future regulatory prospects and explored in depth the criteria for qualifying ESM as by-products, the relevant stockpiling and storage methods, the environmental and geotechnical characterisation techniques, as well as opportunities for reusing spoil in the circular economy, through technical presentations, case studies and round tables.
The event was well attended by engineers, geologists, environmental technicians, businesses, public officials and industry operators, confirming the growing interest in innovative and sustainable practices for managing natural resources from excavation activities.
