Work begins on the new railway bridge over the Brenta river

The foundation stone laying ceremony was held on 2 February for the construction contract for the new railway bridge over the Brenta river and the completion of the doubling of the Padua-Castelfranco line, in the Padua-Vigodarzere section, for which Italferr carries out the services of Project Management and Works Management.

At the opening ceremony of the construction site were Luca Zaia - President of the Veneto Region, Sergio Giordani - President of the Province of Padua and Mayor of the Municipality of Padua, Zordan Adolfo - Mayor of the Municipality of Vigodarzere, Vera Fiorani - Managing Director and General Manager of RFI, Vincenzo Macello - Deputy General Manager Network Management RFI Infrastructures, Rosanna Del Maschio - Italferr Project Manager and Giuseppe Bellizzi - Italferr Safety Coordinator in the execution phase.

The intervention provides for the doubling of the Padua-Castelfranco line in the Padua-Vigodarzere section between the Vigodarzere station in the north and the A4 motorway in the south for an extension of approximately 1.9 km.

The most significant work of the doubling consists in the construction of a metal arch bridge with a single span of 100 m in length, which represents, for this structural typology, the longest railway bridge in Italy and connects the banks of the river Brenta linking Padua with the municipality of Vigodarzere (PD). The doubling of the railway will make it possible to increase the line's capacity by 25%, improving the frequency and regularity of both passenger and freight journeys.

The works were delivered on 18 January and are expected to be completed in the spring of 2026. Environmental mitigation works will also be carried out under Italferr supervision with the installation of anti-noise and landscaping barriers, maintenance of the green areas adjacent to tracks and the adaptation of existing cycle/pedestrian paths. The project also includes the redevelopment of the Vigodarzere station and some underpasses.
