“L’Italia del futuro è in corso”: work on Florence's High-Speed rail link and station kicks off

Italferr heads the Works Supervision activities.

On 15 May 2023, with the switching on of the "Iris" TBM, work began on the construction of the Florence HS Link that includes the railway undercrossing of the city and the new Firenze Belfiore HS station.

The activities, under Italferr's Works Supervision, involve the excavation of two tunnels at a depth of about 20 meters, each about 7 kilometers long and connected by safety by-passes every 500 m, between the Firenze Campo di Marte station and the Viale XI Agosto area. The rail undercrossing will allow the separation of traffic flows between regional and high-speed trains, bringing enormous benefits to people, to economic and tourist activities, and to local and metropolitan mobility.

The new Firenze Belfiore HS station will also be built on the underground route and will be interconnected with the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station and with the urban area thanks to several modes of transportation: the new people-mover, line 2 of the city streetcar system already in operation, and suitably increased numbers of city buses.

Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, President of the Tuscany Region Eugenio Giani, Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella, CEO of the FS Italiane Group Luigi Ferraris, Andrea Nardinocchi, CEO of Italferr, and Carlo Luzzatto, CEO of Impresa Pizzarotti & C, opened the event.

The event also represented the Tuscan stage of the "Cantieri Parlanti project launched out by the FS Group, with the companies RFI and Italferr, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport: a veritable "transparency operation" giving voice to more than 30 Strategic Projects throughout Italy.

The construction sites of the FS Group's Infrastructure Hub "speak" a simple, transparent and immediate language, shared with the territories, to tell their story and mission and to make citizens and stakeholders more aware and updated on the importance of the works underway.

These are infrastructure projects that respond to a strategy of upgrading the rail network for an increasingly interconnected country, capable of overcoming territorial inequalities and improving the quality of services for citizens.

With a view to simplification and accessibility, the Cantieri Parlanti project also become digital, with a dedicated website where it is possible to connect to webcams that film the work in real time.

The constant updating of information on the progress of the works and the benefits they will bring to citizens and territories translates into a shared commitment to complete them in a defined and transparent manner and within a set timeframe.
