On 16 October 2025, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini conducted a technical inspection of the construction site for the new rail link to Venice Marco Polo Airport. The aim of this strategic mobility project in the area is to improve accessibility to the airport and expand the regional transport system.
He was welcomed by the Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, the Prefect, Darco Pellos, the Special Government Commissioner, Vincenzo Macello, together with representatives of both RFI and Italferr. Also present were engineers from Italferr's Works Management Department, involved in day-to-day activities of the construction site, providing their technical expertise, innovation and operational oversight.
The progress of phase one of the works was presented, which involves linking the airport with the Venice to Trieste main line, initially by means of a point-to-point or “shuttle” service, while awaiting completion of the planned “loop” line.
The project features the construction of the railway line – approximately 8 km long, of which, 41% in tunnels, 12% in trenches, 40% on embankments and 7% on viaducts – and of the new “Venezia Aeroporto” railway station, for a total cost of approximately €644 million, also financed by the NRRP, under measure M3C1 1.5 “Upgrading major metropolitan hubs and routes”.
The contract provides for the adoption of digital information management methods and tools in the construction documentation and the construction phases. Currently, there are 12 operational work fronts, with the use of 8 machines for the diaphragms and 6 for jet grouting, in relation to the tunnel construction.
Italferr, the FS Group's engineering company, confirms its leading role in providing know how for the development of strategic modern, sustainable and integrated infrastructure for the future of Italy.
