On 6 October 2025 quadrupling of the railway line between Genova Voltri and Genova Sampierdarena was put into service, a strategic project that marks a decisive change for mobility in Liguria and countrywide.
The inaugural train, which left Genova Piazza Principe for Genova Voltri, carried Edoardo Rixi, Deputy Infrastructures and Transport Minister, Calogero Mauceri, Government Commissioner, and, for Gruppo FS, Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors Aldo Isi, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, Dario Lo Bosco, Italferr, and Gianpiero Strisciuglio, Trenitalia, as well as those from the major central and territorial Institutions.
The project, an integral part of of the Rhine-Alps Corridor of the TEN-T network, was combined with works on the Giovi Third Crossing, to form a Single Project that upgrades the link between the Port of Genoa and the Po plain.
Quadrupling provides for four tracks: two set aside for metropolitan and regional traffic along the existing coastline, and two for long-distance - freight and passenger - trains, created by completing the Bretella di Voltri and including it near Sampierdarena station. This configuration provides a direct link to the Third Crossing, improving the logistical efficiency of the Port of Prà Voltri.
In railway terms, this allows greater line capacity, separation of freight and passenger traffic, and improved punctuality, speed and safety, while reducing travelling times and emissions, as well as a more efficient link to the logistical hubs in Northern Italy.
Italferr, a Company in Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, played a central role in the project in terms of High-Level Supervision and Direction of Works, seeing to project management, checking planning, and controlling the construction phase.
"By means of this action, Italferr confirms its engineering leadership in modernising Italian and European infrastructures, by applying a multi-disciplinary approach that includes engineering, sustainability, and territorial integration, marked by legality, in part thanks to protocols with Prefectures and Law and Order Forces, in order to avoid infiltration of worksites by organised crime and mafia", pointed out the CEO, Dario Lo Bosco, in his speech.
Italferr was also represented at the ceremony by its Chairperson, Laura Martiniello, Engineering & Operations Director, Vincenzo Macello, Foreign Trade, Business Affairs and Sustainability Director, Irene Gionfriddo, and the design team headed by the North-West Infrastructures Manager, Daniele Scataglini.
The main challenges included a complex urban context, given that the railway route crosses densely populated areas, which called for continuous dialogue with the population and local bodies. It also had to deal with the necessary environmental and landscape protection, integrating large works into the natural and populated context, as well as the complexity of a railway project alongside other worksites.
The success of the operation is due to collaboration between Italferr, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the Infrastructures Ministry, local entities and logistics operators - an important milestone that will allow sextupling the line in 2026.
