Italferr attends Thinkingreen, the sustainable economy salon

New Prospects for Sustainable Urban Regeneration in the Strait of Messina Area

On 26 June, Irene Gionfriddo, Director of Foreign Business Development, Business Affairs and Sustainability at Italferr, represented the FS Group in Taormina at Thinkingreen, a “salon” where professionals, public administration managers and politicians discuss issues related to sustainability.

This was an important opportunity to illustrate the FS Group's commitment to sustainable development objectives, with an increasingly broad and structured focus on opportunities related to urban regeneration and sustainable railway infrastructure design.

In the latter case, Italferr, as the FS Group's engineering company and a national leader and global player in the design of large-scale sustainable, integrated and resilient infrastructure, develops its projects by combining traditional engineering know-how with a growing awareness of environmental and social issues. In line with global and European sustainable development strategies, the company works to increase and improve the efficiency of rail transport with a view to territorial cohesion, experimenting with new design methods and strengthening its engagement with local communities and dialogue with stakeholders.

In this sense, in addition to playing a key role in shaping the sustainable mobility scenarios of tomorrow, Italferr considers infrastructure projects as a driver of sustainability to accelerate the country's ecological transition, promote landscape enhancement, and encourage environmental regeneration and the morphological reconfiguration of the urban contexts involved.

The design solutions for the Strait of Messina area stand out among the initiatives presented at the event, because they aim to strengthen landscape and environmental networks and reconnect the urban fabric through green works and integrated infrastructure.

A central part of the meeting was dedicated to the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 31 January 2025 between the Municipality of Messina, the Region of Sicily, Società Stretto di Messina, RFI and FS Sistemi Urbani, to set out a shared strategy for the enhancement and reuse of abandoned railway areas, with a view to the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge and the inclusion of the area in the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T corridor.

The initiative is part of a long-term process, in line with previous protocols and studies, and represents a concrete opportunity to activate a coordinated urban regeneration process, improving modal integration and restoring value to the city's waterfront.
