Sicily: Giampilieri–Fiumefreddo

Successful Completion of the First Hyperbaric Access to the Excavation Chamber

As part of the Giampilieri–Fiumefreddo project, Lot 2, the first hyperbaric access to the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) excavation chamber was successfully completed—an essential operation for the maintenance of the machine head.

The intervention was meticulously planned, with rigorous document checks, active medical and fire safety measures, and a fully operational emergency hyperbaric chamber. Every phase was managed in full compliance with current regulations and the Safety and Coordination Plan.

The success of the operation is the result of synergy and effective coordination between executing companies and technical teams, who collaborated with precision and professionalism. The technical working group included specialists in hyperbaric activities, allowing for detailed definition of operational tasks and safety measures.

Throughout all phases, the presence of specialized medical personnel was ensured, continuously monitoring the operators' vital signs. A thorough inspection confirmed the correct application of procedures, guaranteeing full protection for the workers.

The completion of the hyperbaric access stands as a concrete example of engineering excellence, safety, and operational coordination. This milestone was achieved thanks to the joint commitment of all professionals involved, in line with the highest standards required by Italferr.
