Italferr, Romania: successfully completed the Feasibility Study for the rehabilitation of the Craiova-Caransebes railway line

Italferr scores a new important success in the Balkans.

Italferr, FS Group Infrastructure hub, received the Successful Completion Certificate issued by the Client Compania Naţională de Căi Ferate “CFR” S.A. (Romanian Railway) for the Feasibility Study for the rehabilitation of the railway line Craiova - Drobeta Turnu Severin -Caransebes.

The Study, awarded in 2018 with the partners ISPCF S.A. and Italrom Inginerie Internationala s.r.l., aimed the complete modernization of the Craiova - Drobeta Turnu Severin - Caransebes railway, ensuring compliance to the Technical Specifications of Interoperability (TSI) and European standards. The maximum design speed 120 km/h for freight trains and 160km/h for passenger trains, the signalling system is the ERTMS level 2 including GSM-R.

The railway line, about 234 km long out of which 180 km are single-track, is one of the most complex railway section in Romania, it crosses mountainous territories near landslides and in the area surrounding Drobeta Turnu Severin and skirts the northern bank of the Danube River that delimits the border between Romania and Serbia.

The performed service include Traffic Demand Forecast using EMME 3, preparation of the Operational  Model, Alignment study  for 3 alternatives, Costs Beneficial Analysis (CBA), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Geological and Geotechnical investigations, Archaeological investigations, Topographic surveys, development of an Operation and Maintenance plan, development Preliminary Design for all disciplines such as: Infrastructure (embankment, bridges, viaduct, 15 Tunnels up to 6km), track, Station Building modernization, Traction Power Supply System 25kVAC, Signalling (ERTMS, CTC, Electronic Interlocking, etc. ) and Telecommunication systems and new Operation Control Centre (OCC) in Craiova.

Thanks to the provided service, CFR is preparing the Design & Build Tender for the works with a total investment value of approx. 2 billion euros.

Another important opportunity for Italferr to export the Made in Italy and to consolidate its presence in the Romanian market for which has carried out several important projects since 2001.
