Upgrading works for the railway infrastructure of the Bergamo Hub now under way

Italferr has been assigned Works Supervision

Work has begun for the construction of the new railway station in the city of Bergamo, a future hub of urban reconnection and sustainable mobility, whose project also includes track-doubling on the Ponte San Pietro-Bergamo line.

Financed with NRRP funds, the works have the triple objective of increasing connections between Bergamo, Monza and Milan, of creating the new connection with Italy’s third busiest international airport Bergamo-Orio Al Serio, and of increasing accessibility with the new Curno stop and the upgrading of the Bergamo Ospedale stop.

As leading company of the Infrastructure Hub of the FS Italiane Group and client of the project, RFI - Rete Ferroviaria Italiana has entrusted Italferr, the engineering company of the Infrastructure Hub, with the supervision of the works.

Following are detailed descriptions of the works:

·       The upgrading of Bergamo's PRG by taking advantage of the station closure period, with the demolition and new construction of tracks and track fixtures, platforms, shelters, station underpass and related connections, systems and technologies functional to the PRG's configuration.

·       The intervention concerning Bergamo's ACC envisages the construction of two new Technological Buildings called Area Manager and a new prefabricated Medium Voltage delivery cabin. In addition to the new Technological Buildings, a new Centralised Computerised Apparatus (ACC) will be activated for the management and control of railway traffic.

·       The new Bergamo HUB project includes the construction of two new bridge buildings to function as urban link between the northern and southern parts of the city and act as a belvedere over the historic city of Bergamo.

·       The track-doubling project for the Bergamo - Ponte S. Pietro section runs closely alongside the existing section from Bergamo to Curno and also provides for the elimination of the existing level crossings (PL), the expansion of the Bergamo Ospedale stop, the construction of the Curno stop, the redevelopment of the Ponte S. Pietro PRG and the adaptation of the Via San Bernardino and Via dei Caniana viaducts in Bergamo.

·       The works for the construction of the new railway link between Bergamo Station and Orio Al Serio Airport aim to create a direct railway connection to the airport from Bergamo Station in order to meet the ever-increasing demand for transfer to and from the airport. The project consists in the construction of a new double-track railway line, with an overall length of approximately 5.3 km, and a new above-ground railway station to be served by four station platforms covered by metal canopies.

Considering the complexity and multidisciplinary nature of the interventions, Italferr's North-West Infrastructure Area, North Technology Area and Industrial Projects and Territory Area departments will be involved.

The new Bergamo railway station and the doubling of the Bergamo Ponte San Pietro line are among the strategic works of the Cantieri Parlanti (Talking Construction Sites) project, the transparency operation conducted by the FS Group with the RFI infrastructure hub companies and Italferr, in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, to illustrate the benefits of the work and provide up-to-date data through panels placed inside the construction sites, but always clearly visible to the public and those passing through on the lines and roads bordering the construction sites.
