On 22 May 2024 the demolition of the diaphragm of the Colle Baccotto bored tunnel located in the municipality of Peschiera del Garda in the province of Verona marked the completion of the excavation project.
The work is part of the new HS/HC Brescia Est-Verona line that crosses the regions of Lombardy and Veneto through 11 municipalities in the provinces of Brescia, Verona and Mantua, and envisages the construction of a railway line approximately 48 km long, including 2.2 km of the ‘Verona Merci’ interconnection with the Verona-Brenner railway backbone.
The demolition of the diaphragm wall marked the completion of the excavation of the tunnel, which began in 2022 and was done entirely using conventional methods for a length of 240 m, crossing through the moraine deposits pertaining to the geological units (Pleistocene-Holocene) of the Garda amphitheatre. The excavation also involved the undercrossing of an overlying area of significant artistic and historical interest, seeing that above the tunnel is the Villa De Peverelli Della Cella historic building (formerly Baccotto fort) and its park.
The tunnel, consisting of a single double-track bore, was excavated proceeding from the Verona side entrance in the direction of Brescia.
The day represented a further milestone for the entire Works Supervision team of Italferr, the engineering company of the FS Group's Infrastructure Hub, which with constant commitment and dedication checked all construction phases.
The completion work, carried out by the Cepavdue consortium, will continue in the coming weeks with the final lining and will end with the installation of the railway superstructure and the technological systems.
