On 30 June 2024, the new Computerized Central Interlocking (ACC) of the Genoa Brignole line was put into operation, replacing the previous Itinerary-based Central Electric Interlocking (ACEI) system implemented in 1973. At the same time, 3 new rolling stock docking tracks between 290 and 340 meters long were opened at the Piazza Terralba area.
The state-of-the-art facility, which is ready for interfacing with the future ERTMS HD (European Rail Traffic Management System - High Density) system, not only manages rail traffic in the station and on the new sidings, but also oversees the connection with Trenitalia's locomotive depot, the connection with the tracks intended for rolling stock cleaning and washing activities, the connection with the RFI maintenance yard, and the management of the neighboring rail sections of the Genoa-La Spezia and Genoa-XX Miglia lines by means of block emulation.
The technological revamping of the railway infrastructure was completed with the upgrading of the telecommunication network via the activation of the new VoIP (Voice over IP) equipment, with the installation of new telephone exchanges at the Genoa Brignole and Genoa Piazza Principe stations and of digital telephones installed on the station forecourts and at the Movement Management stations, which connect Genoa Brignole and Genoa Piazza Principe with the Genoa Teglia traffic room.
The activation marks the completion of a project that lasted 6 years, which went through tragic events such as the Morandi Bridge collapse and the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the work nevertheless went on thanks to the Works Supervision activity of Italferr, the engineering company of the FS Group Infrastructure Hub, in synergy with the RFI Client and contractors HITACHI and SIFEL.
