After the historic Porta Genova station closed down, Milan now welcomes the new Scalo Romana station, a strategic urban mobility facility also for the upcoming Winter Olympics. The station has been completely redeveloped and modernised and is now part of Milan’s commuter rail and rapid transit network, modelled on the German S-Bahn system, with services running as frequently as every 15 minutes, thanks to the integration of lines S9, S19 and the regional rail line from Mortara and Vigevano.
Italferr, the engineering company of FS Group, is at the heart of this transformation, having served as project manager of the design process and site supervisor of the works for the construction of the new station, which is aligned with the old station. The project featured the construction of the underpass and canopies, the renovation of the passenger building and the access roads, based on an approach focusing on sustainability and enhancing the architectural heritage.
The heritage listed old station, built in 1931, has been preserved and given a new lease of life, bringing it up to European standards for metropolitan railway services, with higher platforms, tactile paths for the visually impaired, escalators and lifts, renovated canopies and soft mobility facilities, such as a bike parking service and parking spaces for people with reduced mobility. A new underpass has also been built between Via Longanesi and Via Sannio, improving connections between neighbourhoods and promoting accessibility.
Scalo Romana is strategically located close to the Olympic Village and will be a key interchange hub for the M2, M4 and M3 underground lines (the latter within walking distance). The project will improve mobility as well as contribute to urban regeneration ahead of the Winter Olympics.
