Italferr and the Metropolitan City of Messina enter into an advanced infrastructure management agreement

22 December 2025

The Metropolitan City of Messina approved, with Mayoral Decree no. 178 of 22 December 2025, the draft agreement with Italferr – Ferrovie dello Stato Group – for adopting advanced digital systems in the design, management and monitoring of public works.

The agreement stems from the authority's need to optimise time, costs and safety on construction sites by exploiting the latest digital technologies.

Under the agreement, Italferr, as a driver of digital engineering in Italy and worldwide, will provide the Metropolitan City authorities with integrated information management platforms and BIM (Building Information Modelling) models, based on its proprietary advanced systems, which are unique in the EU, to enable the digitisation and management of all construction work phases.

The agreement echoes the important synergies and partnerships that Italferr has already established, as a means of helping to boost the country's economy, with entities such as ANSFISA (the National Agency for the Safety of Railways and Road and Motorway Infrastructure), the Metropolitan City of Rome and the State Property Agency.

Thanks to these tools, designers and companies will be able to collaborate more efficiently, reducing the impact on the ecosystem and the need for making changes during construction. This technology also allows for a preventive digital analysis of risk prevention during construction, for the work teams and equipment, with health and safety support and training provided by Italferr.

One of the most innovative aspects of the agreement is data centralisation, which will enable the local government to build more accessible and reliable infrastructure, thanks, in part, to the support of AI and drones provided by Italferr. Joint workshops, technical meetings and pilot studies on innovation, digitisation and safety are also envisaged.

This collaboration significantly consolidates Italferr's role in the area of the Strait of Messina, also with a view to the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge and connections to the EU's TEN networks, in supporting local governments and authorities in the process of modernising and digitising public infrastructure for the benefit of the local communities and businesses.
