Activation of the new Lugagnano Junction

Italferr plays a leading role in the Brescia Est–Verona high-speed/high-capacity rail project

In the night between 7 and 8 December 2025, the new Lugagnano rail junction was activated. Located on the outskirts of Verona, it is a strategic element of the Brescia Est–Verona High Speed/High Capacity project, under construction, for connecting the new HS/HC line to the existing convention Milan–Verona main line, improving rail traffic capacity and flow.

This important milestone is the result of the commitment and expertise of Italferr, the FS Group's engineering company, which carried out the design and technical coordination of this complex and essential project for Italy’s mobility network.

The new junction is part of an infrastructure project characterised by some significant design challenges: two embankments and three trenches alongside the conventional line; two artificial tunnels passing under four tracks, ensuring the future freight connection to the Quadrante Europa; the construction of two technological buildings (the “Lugagnano” electric traction substation and the IS building) and over 1 km of noise barriers.

The track construction work involved the installation of eight latest-generation points, while the technological systems were completely reconfigured to integrate the new junction, with the adoption of advanced traffic safety systems. In addition, the electric traction system was upgraded and the new 3 kV DC ET substation activated.

The successful activation confirms Italferr's role as a hub of engineering excellence, thanks to its specialist and multidisciplinary know-how, which sets it apart in the industry, both nationally and internationally. The contribution of Italferr professionals was decisive in ensuring the success of the project, from the construction site and the many local offices across the country.
