Andrea Pigorini, Head of Infrastructure Engineering at Italferr's Engineering & Operations Department, is the new President of the International Tunnelling & Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES) for the upcoming 2025-2028 term. The election took place during the WTC 2025 World Congress held in Stockholm last week.
ITA-AITES, founded in 1974, is a non-governmental non-profit organisation based in Geneva, which brings together 81 member nations represented by national scientific associations in the field of underground works and includes Italy’s Società Italiana Gallerie (SIG). This makes it one of the most important global organisations in the field of underground engineering, ensuring continuous collaboration between experts worldwide.
The organisation promotes the development and sustainable use of underground spaces, with a strong focus on tunnelling techniques and infrastructure safety, thanks to its special consultative status granted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The main activities of ITA include developing international technical standards, disseminating best practices in the field of the design, construction and operation of underground infrastructure and organising events such as the World Tunnel Congress (WTC), which brings together several thousand world experts in the industry every year. For several years now, Italferr has actively participated in the activities of both the national and international organisations.
We wish Andrea Pigorini all the best for this exciting new international assignment!
