Bogotá: the first metro line reaches the 55% progress mark

Work started on the urban viaduct on Avenida Caracas, the city's main artery

The First Line of the Bogotá Metro project has reached its 55% progress mark, confirming its status as one of the major infrastructure projects currently under way in Latin America.

In June 2025, construction work began on the elevated viaduct along Avenida Caracas, a strategic axis in the eastern quadrant of the city. The construction work involves temporary deviations to road traffic, which is being managed in coordination with the local authorities.

The line will be 24 kilometres long and is entirely elevated, with 16 stations and services operated by automatic driverless trains (GOA4), with an estimated capacity of 72,000 passengers/hour per direction.

The infrastructure is being built by the concessionaire Metro Línea 1 S.A.S., set up by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and Xi'an Metro, while the trains will be supplied by CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles.

The engineering and contract supervision of the project has been awarded to an international consortium of Interventoría, of which Italferr is a member, which contributes its know-how in railway engineering, project management and quality control to completing the project.

The first trains are scheduled to be supplied in the second half of 2025, while services will begin in 2028.

Thanks to this project, Bogotá is moving towards a model of sustainable, efficient and integrated urban mobility, while strengthening the presence of the Italian engineering system in major international projects.
