THE PROJECT
The new Ferrandina - Matera railway line project, with the goal of linking the town of Sassi to the Potenza - Metaponto railway line, includes completion of a new single-track electrified line. This line involves complex tasks along a stretch with about 30% in tunnels, 27% on viaducts, and 43% in cuttings / on embankments, covering 22 km.
The overall cost of the works is about Euro 525 million, in part financed using PNRR [National Recovery and Resilience Plan] resources. This project is part of the PNRR M3C1 I1.7 “Upgrading electrification and enhancing resilience of Stations in the South” measure, which is one of those included in the proposed revision to the PNRR approved by the Italian Government on 19/05/2025.
The contract covered implementation of methods and instruments for digital computerised management of preparation of the working drawings, as well as of the construction phase.
Management of the various phases is based on continuous updating of more than 250 information models organised using a federated model in a data sharing environment, using evolved, centralised data management.
The works are supported by computerised management of technical worksite accounting activities, using a platform that integrates the design information with digital worksite surveys and information on works progress using BIM 4D and 5D models, in a single geo-referenced system.
Worksite progress is tracked by daily implementation of data in the digital systems, by adding information from the field (e.g. reports, images, point clouds, etc.) to the project model.
THE SITE INSPECTION
The planned technical site inspection at the base camp of the “Miglionico” Tunnel worksite and the site set aside for work on the related traffic opening, included involvement of high-ranking Institutions and FS Top Management, providing the setting for Italferr CEO Dario Lo Bosco to speak and state that "Italferr and the entire FS Group, use advanced high-tech engineering systems and digital time and cost control via BIM 4D and 5D, making them leaders in Europe and worldwide, working with the team of FS men and women to create a connection between the country areas and TEN-T transnational corridors.
In so doing they avoid changes while work is in progress which are not improvements, while completing works not completed in recent decades, as is the case of today’s visit. They also ward off delays and extra costs, marked by the utmost transparency, safety, and efficiency". This demonstrates how, with its usual dedication, Italferr plays a leading role in digitalised worksite management, providing an integrated, quick, complete overview of works progress, in order to guarantee correct execution of the works.
