Italferr launches its Security Walk Cycle

Going boots on the ground to improve our field safety, governance and risk management culture

Italferr is engaged in launching its Security Walk Cycle, which involves field inspections by members of the Board of Directors and the Board of Statutory Auditors, as well as institutional representatives and representatives of FS Group, at the proposal of the Internal Control, Risk and Sustainability Committee.

The initiative is designed with the aim of promoting a HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) culture built on direct experience of construction sites, furthering operational knowledge of the Company's core activities and consolidating the Combined Assurance model, by improved integration between risk monitoring and management measures.

Security Walks are slated to be carried out in four strategic regions – Marche, Campania, Sicily and Calabria – selected on the basis of objective criteria, such as the economic significance of the contracts, their technical complexity, work progress and the potential synergy between controls.

These regions account for approximately 29% of the national work portfolio and include the major high-risk projects planned for the 2025-2026 two-year period.

First stop: Marche

The inaugural event of the Cycle took place on 12 September, with a visit to the Genga–Serra San Quirico construction site for doubling of the Orte-Falconara line, as part of the project focusing on “Environmental Protection & Construction Site Safety”.

The event was attended by the President of Italferr Laura Martiniello, the Board of Directors of Italferr, representatives of RFI, local businesses and the Head of the Transport Department of the Region of Marche. The initiative’s success was guaranteed by the active participation of all the professionals involved in the supply chain, who join forces every day to carry out strategic projects aimed at redesigning mobility in Italy and build a more inclusive, sustainable and efficient system, according to the investment plans of RFI and FS Group.

Ms. Martiniello emphasised that the event held at the Genga construction site “will kickstart an important process for further strengthening our culture of health, safety and sustainability, by building on direct field experience that can then help us to better determine more effective organisation designs”.

Against this backdrop, verifying the ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified management systems, which certify compliance with the applicable rules and procedures, is of fundamental importance, while internal audits are necessary to assess the effectiveness of the monitoring measures in minimising risk and generating value. The integration of these two approaches can boost our Combined Assurance model and offer the top management a unique, consistent and reliable view of safety, the environment, and process sustainability.

The event closed with a visit to the La Rossa tunnelling site at Chiarodovo (in the municipality of Genga), where the President gave the go ahead for the “final sprint”, the last phase of the tunnelling before completion of the excavation work.

Our commitment to safety

The first stage of the Security Walk served as an important opportunity for operational and institutional discussion and exchange, with a specific focus on the safety of Apennine tunnels and environmental mitigation measures, in an area subject to specific restrictions for the prevention and control of geological disasters.

This initiative shows Italferr’s continued commitment to integrated governance, a field safety culture, and conscious risk management, in full alignment with the strategic objectives of FS Group and the challenges set by the PNRR.
