The new underpass on Via Provinciale at Forcola, in Valtellina, has officially opened to traffic. This project replaces the previous level crossing on the Colico–Sondrio section of the Lecco–Tirano railway line and is of strategic importance for improving mobility and road safety in the area.
The project forms part of the infrastructure upgrade programme planned for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, with the aim of upgrading and enhancing the efficiency and safety of the road and rail network. Italferr was responsible for project management, worksite supervision, safety management and project verification, ensuring the technical and operational coordination of the work.
The new underpass consists of two lanes for vehicle traffic, one in each direction of travel, as well as a cycle and pedestrian path to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The infrastructure is approximately 30 metres long, 5 metres high and 12.5 metres wide. It includes access ramps and connecting roads, designed to improve local traffic flow.
The new road runs south of the railway line, allowing uninterrupted passage over the Pasqualina Road, the railway and the primary Stelvio State Road 38, and connecting with the future secondary road network to be built by ANAS.
The underpass has enabled the removal of the level crossing, which will significantly reduce waiting times and greatly increase safety for the motorists, motorcyclists and heavy goods vehicles that travel along this stretch of road every day.
The underpass was constructed using an advanced engineering technique involving a reinforced concrete structure driven under the railway tracks to limit interference with railway operations. Particular attention was required during construction due to the presence of water in the subsoil, and specific solutions were implemented to ensure stability and waterproofing.
The project also involved existing waterways in the area, such as the Adda Morta Canal, which was temporarily diverted to allow the construction of the southern ramp, and the Guicciarda Canal, which was overpassed by a dedicated structure to ensure correct water flow.
The opening of the new underpass is an important milestone for mobility in the Valtellina area, improving road safety and access to the area, particularly in anticipation of the major international events scheduled for 2026.
