The Napoli-Bari line: yet another step forward

New milestones for FS Engineering

Work continues apace on the new Naples-Bari high-speed/high-capacity line, one of the most strategic mobility infrastructure projects underway in Italy. During the Continuous Service Interruption (ICE) on the Caserta-Foggia line – from 10:30 a.m. on 2 February to 4:00 a.m. on 15 February 2026 – FS Engineering made yet another important step forward in completing the project, confirming its excellence status in the design and development of major national railway projects.

In this phase, the doubled Cancello-Frasso Telesino section was activated and the first 3 km stretch of new tracks between the stations of San Lorenzo Maggiore and Ponte Casalduni was connected. At the same time, FS Engineering submitted a request to ANSFISA for authorisation to commission the Naples-Cancello section, which is scheduled for activation in the summer of 2026.

Completion of the doubling of the Cancello - Frasso Telesino section

Less than five months after first being activated on 27 September 2025, the odd track for the remaining 12 km, up to the kilometre point 15+740, has also been put into operation, completing the doubling of the entire section, which is approximately 15 km long. The new route features the 4-km-long Monte Aglio Tunnel, eight viaducts and the removal of 13 level crossings, increasing rail traffic safety and efficiency.

The complexity of the engineering operations, coordinated by FS Engineering, involved the commissioning of the Train Running Control System (SCMT) for the odd track, the reconfiguration of the Multistation Centralised Computer-Based Interlocking System (ACC-M) at the Maddaloni Block Point, and the extension of the Multistation Command and Control System (SCC-M) at Naples Central Station. These systems, previously introduced in 2025, now enable the central control the entire section thanks to the integration implemented by the expertise of the FS Engineering engineers.

The new 3-km-long track between Telese, San Lorenzo Maggiore and Vitulano

Another significant milestone achieved by FS Engineering concerns the section between San Lorenzo Maggiore and Ponte Casalduni, where approximately 3 km of the future odd track of the Naples-Bari line have been brought into service.

The diverted routes B and C have been activated, reconnecting to the existing line, besides the new Route-Based Electrical Interlocking (ACEI) system at San Lorenzo Maggiore station, while the trackside subsystems of the Train Running Control System (SST-SCMT) have been upgraded, thus ensuring the technological alignment of the Telese and Vitulano systems, according to the most advanced specifications.

This new configuration is a strategic milestone in the Telese-Vitulano project, allowing the demolition of the old tracks and the San Lorenzo Maggiore passenger building, which was a precondition for the construction of the double track.

The results achieved are concrete proof of the importance of integrating multidisciplinary skills, technological innovation and engineering excellence. FS Engineering thus continues as a reliable and solid industry reference point, for tackling the challenges ahead and successfully completing all phases of the construction of the new Naples-Bari high-speed/high-capacity line.
