The 2025 edition of Thinkingreen, the sustainable economy and culture salon, was held at the Hotel Cà Sagredo, in the suggestive heart of Venice, under the patronage of the European Parliament and the Region of Sicily.
Among the key actors at the event, Irene Gionfriddo, Director of Foreign Business Development, Business Affairs and Sustainability at Italferr, contributed the vision and commitment of the FS Group's engineering company to the panel on “Road and rail networks for supporting sustainable tourism”.
In her speech, Ms. Gionfriddo illustrated how Italferr has been a leader in the design of railway infrastructure and more for 40 plus years, in Italy and around the world, with a strong focus on technology innovation and sustainability.
A prime example of this is the Anji Khad Bridge in India, inaugurated in June 2025, which represents a unique model of sustainable design and received the “Award of Merit” in the Bridge/Tunnel category of the ENR Global Best Projects.
The company, which operates in 15 countries on 5 continents, promotes resilient and integrated solutions that combine engineering efficiency and respect for the environment, with a clear focus on intermodal exchange systems for increasingly competitive transport services that can drive economic and social development in the local communities.
This is the backdrop for the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge, designed to connect Sicily to the rest of Italy and Europe, capable of promoting tourism and culture in perfect synergy with a modern, efficient and sustainable transport network.
From Sicily to Veneto, which is hosting the Thinkingreen event, Italferr is involved in all major strategic construction projects in Italy, with the aim of supporting sustainable mobility and tourism, as a strategic combination for developing the country's economy.
An example of Italferr’s and, indeed, the entire FS Group’s, commitment in this regard is the focus on archaeology as a design element of sustainability, capable of boosting tourism by bringing ancient remains and artefacts to light and allowing their enjoyment and appreciation by the public, through significant heritage and archaeological conservation projects. An example of this is the Himera Exhibition, which is ongoing at Palermo’s main station.
Italferr's design approach integrates international protocols such as Envision, advanced digital tools (BIM 4D and 5D) and stakeholder engagement practices, with the aim of transforming infrastructure into drivers of environmental, social and economic regeneration.
Thinkingreen: a forum for the future
The 2025 edition of Thinkingreen marked a turning point, presenting itself as a festival of ecological transition. The panels addressed crucial issues such as infrastructure, water resources, food and biodiversity, with a “talk” format that encouraged dialogue between experts, institutions and businesses.
Irene Gionfriddo's participation represented a synthesis between strategic vision and operational practicality, confirming Italferr's role as a key actor in building a sustainable future for the country and for tourism.
