An important milestone was achieved on 30 May 2025 regarding the Kanpur and Agra metro project, Italferr's most important contract in India.
A key extension of the metro line, between the stations of Moti Jheel and Kanpur Central, opened to passenger services with five new stations (Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, Kanpur Central), as part of the underground “Corridor 1” subsection, in addition to the nine currently operating stations.
This extension will significantly improve urban mobility, providing a connection to the main railway station and a densely populated area of the city, with markets, educational institutions and hospitals.
The project
In 2020, Italferr, in partnership with Spanish engineering company Typsa, was awarded the Project Management Consulting contract for the Kanpur & Agra Metro in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The project involves the construction of four corridors totalling 62.6 km, between the Kanpur Metro and Agra Metro systems, with a total of 57 stations and four depots, to be developed in phases.
Specifically, the new Kanpur Metro line will consist of two main corridors, one from Kanpur to Naubasta (23.785 km) and the other from “Agricultural University” to Barra (8.60 km), for a total length of approximately 32 km, with 30 stations and 2 depots.
The Agra Metro line will also feature two corridors connecting Sikandra to Taj East Gate (14 km) and Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar (16.20 km) for a total length of approximately 30 km, with 27 stations and 2 depots.
